Community Art Project
Free the Deeds is a Minneapolis-wide public art project with the goal to illuminate Minneapolis’ housing history of racial covenants (known as redlining) and offer a path to repair.
For this project, I researched that history and designed yard signs to act as an invitation for neighbors and community members to engage in more conversation about the discrimination underlying our communities.
A person in a tye-dyed tshirt holds several yard signs with messages about Free the Deeds.
An up close image of a yard sign. The background sky is composed of the names of south Minneapolis neighborhoods. Small multicolored house sit in the foreground and above read the words, we are building racial equity, one deed at a time.
A yard sign with a light sky blue background. A rough red line outlines the shape of a house whose interior is filled with barely readable phrases from old racial covenants. To the left of the house text reads, The house had a racial covenant.
